The primary role of a dental hygienist is to prevent and treat oral diseases. Dental hygienists are licensed by the state in which they work and are part of a healthcare team that includes dental assistants, dentists, and other experts.
Dental hygienists:
- Perform oral health assessments
- Clean teeth by removing plaque and tartar
- Apply sealants and fluoride
- Take and interpret x-rays
- Administer local anesthesia
- Educate and counsel patients on how to maintain optimal oral health
